Certainly, today there is much more competition in the job market. Instead of waiting at home for your phone to ring, consider attending the next job fair in your area. How you approach your visit to the fair can effect whether or not your get good results.
Once at the fair, find the list of participating companies and reading through it, find a few that interest you. Spend you time on companies that you really are interested in instead of wasting time going from booth to booth.
There should be a map of the floor plan that you can pick up. Show your enthusiasm for the work and start a conversation with the representative and listen to what he tells you. Although the human resource person can offer information on their process on hiring, it is the hiring manager that you most want to connect with. It is good to prepare yourself with a short statement about yourself and some on your background, but keep it short, less than a few minutes if good. If you can offer a unique piece of information about yourself that will be remembered, put it out there, this a way you can stand out from all the others. Follow up with whomever you spoke with so show you are still interested.
